We Need A “More Sophisticated Understanding” Of Coyote Management

In Maine’s debate about what to do about predator control, some towns and local sporting clubs have started up coyote hunting contests in hopes of helping to save a deer or two. In places the deer herd is beyond serious trouble, it’s become unsustainable and will be extirpated. The contests have stirred up protests from the usual groups. The Bangor Daily News today in an editorial said, “But a more sophisticated understanding of the role coyotes play in the ecosystem is overdue.”

A friend and reader sent this information to me and so I thought it would be worth passing on. The YouTube video relates the history behind a Maine village lost to “progress” due to the building of a dam. I decided to share it here because even if you’re not from Maine, most of what the video and the lyrics to the song say, many of us can easily relate.

Have you heard of Flagstaff, Maine? It’s a ghost town now, submerged under the waters of Flagstaff Lake. A dam was built along the Dead River back in 1950, enlarging Flagstaff Lake and burying the town of Flagstaff. In his book “Unfinished Business,” Halford Luccock tells this story:

Our strength is sapped by a lack of faith.

One night at dinner a man, who had spent many summers in Maine, fascinated his companions by telling of his experiences in a little town named Flagstaff. The town was to be flooded, as part of a
large lake for which a dam was being built. In the months before it was to be flooded, all improvements and repairs in the whole town were stopped. What was the use of painting a house if it were to be covered with water in six months? Why repair anything when the whole village was to be wiped out? So, week by week, the whole town became more and more bedraggled, more gone to seed, more woebegone.Then he added by way of explanation: “Where there is no faith inthe future, there is no power in the present.”

“Where there is no faith in the future, there is no power in the present.” In his famous song “Imagine,” John Lennon wrote, “Imagine there’s no heaven. It’s easy if you try. No hell below us. Above us only sky. Imagine all the people. Living for today ….” Lennon somehow had the idea that if people would stop thinking about the future, forget about eternity, they would enjoy the present more. He thought
they would live better lives. He was wrong. “Where there is no faith in the future, there is no power in the present.”

Christians can live the present more fully because we have faith in the future. We know the God that holds the future, and we can face tomorrow without fear. The reality of eternity, the reality of God, the faith we have in the future doesn’t diminish our ability to live well in the present. The hope we have fuels our lives now, letting us experience life more completely than if we lacked such hope. “Where there is no faith in the future, there is no power in the present.”

Listen To Yesterday’s Recorded Live Broadcast Of Open Air With Tom Remington

Yesterday, I attempted my first ever live broadcast of Open Air With Tom Remington. I didn’t think it was going to happen for most of the morning as it seemed I was having one technical failure after another but I finally pulled it off……as it was.

The show is a bit different than other shows in that there are no breaks for commercials or station IDs during the one-hour plus broadcast. I talked with John Stabley, V.P. of Global Operations for Skinny Moose Media, who is attending the Archery Trade Associations trade show in Indianapolis now through Saturday. He gives us an update on the show and how things are going for him.

Other highlights of the show include discussion of some of the continued budget problems at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and an introduction to Bill Moore’s radio broadcast on a local Upper Peninsula sports radio station.

I also spend some time discussing the economic impact hunting, fishing and recreation has on this country with its millions of participants, yet never any mention of these topics with presidential candidates.

Plus a couple of surprises.

Carter Davidson Soon To Release Film “The One”

Raised in the western mountains of Maine on the banks of the Androscoggin River and the village of Bethel, Carter Davidson is an avid fly fisherman, a producer of outdoor adventure television programs, documentaries and most recently executive producer of Gray Ghost Productions fly fishing film titled “The One.” Beginning in 2000, Carter first got his start with Maine PBS, producing and editing a long list of Emmy nominated magazine series and documentaries. Later, he traveled across the globe to locations such as New Zealand, France, Argentina, Chile, and British Columbia to film all sorts of outdoor adventures from extreme skiing, whitewater rafting and kayaking, skydiving, mountain biking and of course fly fishing. In 2007 Carter founded the video production company Gray Ghost Productions and began his search to film and capture the essence of fly fishing.
