If you have an interest in camping then make your way to the fairgrounds for the 2007 RV & Camping Show. I made my way out there early this morning before the sun warmed things up enough for the crowds to show. I got to admit that my idea of camping is more on the tent end of things rather then an upscale $600,000 RV end of things.

Walking through many of the RV’s that had price tags greater then many of our homes I was struck by how advanced camping has become and a far cry from the days of yesteryear. Most of my camping takes place while I’m on a hunting trip and I kind of like the idea of being away from a lot of the distractions of everyday life.
I ran into an old friend and former boss from days gone by when I use to live in Massachusetts. Mo and his wife have also migrated south and run the KOA Campground at Cape Hatteras. It’s not unusual for me to run into people I know but it is rare to find people who call me by my given name and not Moose. It took me a couple of seconds to remember how I knew him but it has been close to 20 years ago when we worked together. Mo tells me that in addition to the campsites they also have some cabins available. I hope to get down there and check it out some time and maybe do a bit of surf fishing as well.
The other intriguing item I saw at the show was the Porta-Bote display. This is the boat that folds flat, 4 inches flat so you can tote and store it easily. The boat is also light compared to the weight of many inflatables. If you’re like me you’ve seen these things in the back of outdoor magazines and you have flashbacks to the x ray glasses in the back of comic books. After looking at the display model I have to think it’s the real deal. I didn’t buy one but I can think of some places one of these would come in handy. I’d be curious if any of my readers have any experience with one of these and how did it work? Post a reply or drop me an email.
Overall the show was pretty good but if your camping style is more like mine then much of the displays will be of little interest. I was hopeful that with additional space added with the new building that there would be a little bit more on the camping end but the RV is still king.
The line to get in as I was leaving
