The Navy’s plan to build an OLF in the very close proximity to the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is a story we have been following very closely. The local newspaper The Washington Daily News is breaking a story that the Navy plan calls for the potential use of poisons to control the bird population if the banning of growing certain crops does not work.

Poison might be used to eradicate some birds around the Navy’s proposed outlying landing field site here.

“The use of controlled toxicants should be investigated and employed on an as-needed basis,” reads one of the technical reports associated with the Navy’s follow-up environmental study.

That sentence is under the standard-techniques section of the conceptual bird-wildlife aircraft strike hazard — or BASH — plan. The plan then names two toxins — Avitrol and DRC-1339 — that could be considered.

The fact that this strategy is even contained in the report suggests how ill advised the location of this site is for the OLF, We’ll continue to follow this story and keep you up to date here is a link to all the OLF stories I’ve done so far.
