I saw it at a distance, but wasn't so sure of what it was. It could have been a big black bobcat, but it seemed much larger. It wasn't a bear. One of the members of the club is a game warden, and he assured us that there are no panthers in NC. One of the guts joked "the next time I see it I'm going to shoot it and prove you wrong!" The game warden said there was a $5,000 fine for doing so. So if there are no panthers in NC, why is there a fine for shooting them? A similar rumor has persisted in the western portion of my county in Virginia (along the Appalachian Trail) for many years but never as much evidence as you've noted. Authorities here too have said that if there is a cat out there, it's probably one that was released from captivity. Good post.
