Hunting still remains a very safe sport when compared to other hobbies and sports despite the perception by many that it is very dangerous. The number of fatal accidents for the 06 07 season here in North Carolina dropped down from previous years with only 5 fatal accidents being reported compared to the 8 reported the year before.
Four out of the five fatal accidents involved a fall out of a tree stand and not one of those four individuals were wearing a safety belt. Something as simple as a safety harness could of prevented them from dieing. Falls from tree stands accounts for many of the accidents and loss of life; we need to work on developing safe habits while using them.
The other fatal accident was a firearm accident where the safety rules were being broken. Two individuals running out of the woods when one falls causing his 30/ 30 to discharge striking his buddy in the back killing him. Neither were wearing hunter orange either but it does not appear that factor would have made a difference in the tragic outcome.
Hunting is a very safe sport we just all need to put safety first. Hunter safety courses are available here in North Carolina as well as other states. If you ‘re interested in taking a class check with your state’s wildlife division for more information
