Checking out the decoys

Been a tough season so far opening day I had trespassers get between me and a gobbler I was working only Tom won in that situation. I’ve called in a few hens and one Jake, while Jakes are legal I let it walk in hopes of catching up with his daddy. This past Saturday my friend Rick and I hunted together in the predawn darkness I picked my spot and Rick went the other direction. It wasn’t long before we realized Rick was in the right spot as the gobbler sounded off. Don’t get me wrong this wasn’t a gimmie by any stretch of the imagination as Rick worked that bird for a couple of hours before he got him.

Weight: 21 lbs 9 oz Beard: 12.75 inches Spurs: one 1 3/16 inches the other 1 5/16 inches, both needle sharp Score: around 72

Rick left for the taxidermist with his trophy bird with 12 ¾ inch beard. I spent the rest of the day in the woods and didn’t even see a turkey. We are about half way through the season and I’m still confident I can tag one before the season goes out. Birds seem to be still henned up but once them hens start leaving the mid day action should really pick up.
