Moose's Box Stand
Any one that has a box blind can attest to wasps love them too. We battle with them all the time but a little trick we learned a few years ago has helped us a lot. It seems that putting moth balls inside the box blind will discourage these winged stingers from making a home. Of course the downside is your box blind smells like grandma’s closet.
weapons of choice to battle wasps
Well this spring I was suppose to go out there and put mothballs out and I never did it so I knew I was going to have a situation to deal with when I finally got out there. Saturday was the day so armed with a couple of cans of spray and some mothballs I went to my box blind. Being about 14 feet up in the air made eradicating the unwanted nesters a bit tricky. 5 nests latter and only one sting I felt pretty good after getting rid of them.
I then filled up some vitamin bottles with mothballs and put them around the blind. That way in the early season I can just put the covers on the bottles and the smell won’t drive me out. While this is not a fool proof trick it does significantly reduce the amount of nests as well as the size of nests.
On my way out I kicked up a hen with 8 poults ( easy to count cause they flew out in front of me) they were about the size of small chickens. I couldn’t grab my camera fast enough to get any photos but it is exciting to see them. Hopefully they’ll make it through the summer and into the fall. Overall it was a pretty good trip to the hunting lease.
