North Carolina Wildlife officers armed with a search warrant went on to a farm in Randolph County looking for illegal captive deer and found some. Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) has been around for a while and once it crossed over the Mississippi River and got into eastern part of the United States game agencies got real serious about trying to slow the spread. North Carolina like many states put into place strict rules about deer farming, transporting deer both dead and alive, to hopefully prevent CWD from showing up here.
I find it hard to believe anyone that has deer or cares about them as much as Wayne Kindley,(the farmer) seems to, did not know about the regulations around keeping them in captivity. Anyone that has done any reading in the field of rehabbing deer should of come across the topic of CWD.
The rules we have in place are to protect the natural resources as well as the citizens of this state NCWRC had no choice but to put these deer down. Since NC adopted these rules back in 2002 initially CWD has spread to West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland.
Will continue to follow this story as it progress but with what has been presented so far it seems NCWRC acted appropriately. I’d be curious to know where the 2 whitetails came from that he had clearly there could not be any misunderstanding on that because you have to be a state certified to rehab deer and a check of the list doesn’t show that he is on the list.
