Don’t forget the Moose Lottery is being drawn tonight from Fort Kent Maine. Tom over the Black Bear Blog is doing a live stream from there. One of these years I’m going to have to get up there for the lottery but like many of you tonight I’ll be sitting around my computer straining to hear my name or one of my many friends and relatives. Good Luck.

On Moose Droppings the Radio Show this week we’ll spend a lot of time talking safety especially treestand safety. There has been 4 accidents already in North Carolina involving treestands two the hunters lost their lives and the other two resulted in serious injuries. The use of a safety harness is of paramount importance. Also talk a little about the short duck season and the impact gas prices are having on hunting. I actually passed on the opening of duck season the main reason being the cost of gas. The other topic we’ll cover is the new sponsor “Sportsman Gear Daily” on the Skinny Moose Network. Interesting business model offering sportsmen a different name brand product at a rock bottom price each day but you have to act fast before it is gone. “Gear Today Gone Tomorrow” As you can see we pack a lot into a 30 minute show so check it out.

There won’t be a radio show this week because of my schedule the last few days. As I posted before my friend Darlene Wyrick passed away unexpectedly this week and in addition my wife’s Uncle Woodrow also died this week.

Mr. James Woodrow Adams
September 17, 2008

Godwin, NC: Mr. James Woodrow Adams, age 84, of 6175 Bluman Road died Wednesday at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. Funeral Services will be at 3:00 PM Friday at Stone’s Creek Advent Christian Church in Benson. Officiating will be Rev. Doug Abel. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
Mr. Adams was born February 14, 1924 in Johnston County to the late John Quincy and Mancy Lee Adams. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Pinkney Adams. Mr. Adams was a farmer and a volunteer fireman with the Godwin-Falcon Fire Department. He served in the U. S. Army Infantry during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Banner Post 109. Mr. Adams was a member of Stone’s Creek Advent Christian Church where he served as a deacon and an elder.

Mr. Woodrow was a great man, loved to fish and always talked to me about my latest hunting adventure. A number of years ago I brought BBQ Goose to the family gathering and he absolutely loved it. From that day on just about every time he saw me he asked me when I was going to bring him some more. I killed some on opening day and froze them with the plan to cook him some when he got out of the hospital. Mr. Woodrow will be missed and whenever I cook geese I’ll have fond memories of him. In honor of him here is my goose recipe.

My recipe for Apple Hickory BBQ Goose
First off we do not pluck the geese we skin and breast the meat out as a boneless cut. Geese come in a wide variety of sizes so you’ll have to adjust cooking times to the size of the geese you have.
Take the boneless skinless goose breasts and put them in a roasting pan with about ¼ inch of apple cider vinegar in the bottom of the pan. Then cover the tops of the skinless goose with strips of bacon. Put the goose in a pre heated oven (375) and let cook till done but not overly down. For me this is usually about 45 minutes (internal temp of 165’f)
BBQ Sauce
Jar of Apple Jelly
Bottle of Hickory BBQ Sauce
½ cup of Apple cider vinegar
Mix all together in saucepan heat slowly stirring often till all the jelly is melted and everything blends together.
Take cooked goose out of oven drain off greases remove bacon and discard. You’ll still have small amount of grease in the pan but that’s fine you just want to dump the majority out. Allow the goose to rest for about 15 minutes and to begin to cool so it is easier to slice. Then slice it up like a roast and then return the slices to the roasting pan. Pour the BBQ sauce over the meat cover the pan with tin foil and return to the oven. Turn the oven down to 300 and leave it in for an hour. I’ve served this and people swear its beef roast or deer roast. No one guesses its Canadian goose.

Radio Show will return next week

Well the last few days have been crazy as I get ready to head north for “God’s Country” and a little bear hunting. Needless to say my plan to put a radio show together has been shot to heck so I’m sorry there won’t be a show this week. I’ll have the equipment with me on this trip if I can get acess to high speed internet to do a show next week from the road.

My intention was to use my Mossberg 500 12 gauge with a slug barrel and the new Remington Core Loct sabot slugs but that won’t be happening. I was unable to get it sighted in so after shooting two boxes of shells and developing a sore shoulder I’m opting for my ’06 instead. I need to invest in a bore sighter for sure.

Well I have a 20 some odd hour road trip ahead of me which should be fun except for that Jersey NYC streatch. Updates on the blog will depend on internet access.

No radio show this week but hopefully I’ll have everything up and running by next week. Computer has been acting up and I think part of it is the amount of digital images I have. They take a lot of space and the memory get filled up quick. I purchased an external hard drive and have begun the long down load process. Well over 200 minutes to download and then I’ll delete them off my computer hard drive. A bit nerve racking when your a photo bug like I am. Speaking of that check out my wildlife photography blog Moose’s Wild America. I’m currently featuring photos I shot in Alaska a few years back.

On today’s show I offer a quick look at what you need to have and do to try your hand at turkey hunting. Turkeys at one time were not as widely available for hunters in North Carolina as they are today. Season opens in a week (or tomorrow if your a youth) so you got some time to get ready and give turkey hunting a try. Moose Droppings the Radio Show airs every Friday at 1 pm or you can download the podcast for free off my archives when it becomes available.

Tune in today to my radio show at 1pm to hear about my Tundra Swan hunting adventures as well about Conman’s Guide Service. Mike and Connie run the guide business on the shores of lake phelps in Washington County. This was my third tundra swan hunt with them and it was a great time. In addition to the Tundra Swan they have bear, deer, turkey, and small game as well as access to the lake that has some phenomenal fishing. I’ve personally hunted deer, swan, turkey and rabbits with them and have never been disappointed. They provide quality service as well as some very nice accommodation’s that they refer to as “cottages” but feel more like home.
So join me for this week’s show.
