I was surfing on Outdoor Life and came across this video of the Rack Man
The Rackman appears to be a pretty phenomenal moose hunter having seen a number of his videos in the past but this one takes the cake. This is just crazy and what a rush it must of been.

That is a nice blue marlin and glad it held out for the week to give Travis the top prize. I’ve actually met Travis we worked some youth camps a number of years ago. Congratulations to Travis and the crew of Double B.

We are about at the half way point of the turkey season time to a self assessment of where you’re at. If you’re like me you probably know a few maybe more hunters who are tagged out. (Maybe your one of those lucky stiffs.) If not if you got one of your tags filled you’re in pretty good shape but if you still have both tags maybe it’s time to panic. Hang on no need to panic there is still plenty of time to bag your birds.
There are a few things that play to your advantage the deeper into the season you get; everyday more and more hens go to nest leaving those Tom’s lonely, less hunters afield either they tagged out or they give up.
There are a few things that some look at as negative but if you think about it you can turn these into advantages. Increased foliage on the trees will make it harder for you to see that gobbler it will also muffle him some so he’ll be a lot closer then you think when he sounds off. This will also give you a bit more cover so you can get away with a little bit of movement but be careful that gobbler maybe closer then you think.
The vocal two year old birds, especially if your hunting an area that gets some pressure, have either already been given a ride home in someone’s truck or they have gotten an education and gotten a bit smarter. The flipside is a number of hunters have tagged out on those two year olds while the long beards have been henned up and now they ain’t. I believe you have a bit better chance on getting on mature birds now so take advantage of it.
Mid way point of the season and there is still plenty of time don’t put extra pressure on yourself. Get out there and fill your tag (s) that’s where I plan to be.

During the 2009 muzzle loader season I shot a buck chasing a doe by my stand rolling him. He then proceeded to stand up and walk away after two days of searching I couldn’t find him. Jump ahead to the 2010 turkey season and I stumble across the remains of the buck while turkey hunting.

Buck skull as it was on the day I found it

While to some hunters this would be a scrub buck and they might just move on to me it was a trophy. I wanted to do something special with it so I contacted Mason & Harold Dorsett with Rac Plaques to get a euro mount done. Harold worked on the skull cleaning it and staining the antlers that had been bleached out by the sun. Of course they then mounted it for me on a Rac Plaque, it turned out excellent with the antlers looking like they did on that day in November in 2009.
Euro Mounts are a great way to display a trophy and the Plaques the Dorsett’s make really show your trophy off.

My euro mount

I’m glad my euro mount was ready when I stopped by their booth at the Dixie Deer Classic. So that is one of the stories from the Classic this past weekend and I’ll link the Dorsett’s with my next story when I talk about B&C bear that they mounted. So check back for that story soon.

White Bull Killed in Vermont

The taking of an albino moose in Vermont by a teenage girl has brought up the debate again. The photos of the moose killed in Vermont are rather impressive. Within the hunting community there are two basic camps a trophy or something that should be protective.

I fall in the trophy camp I see no reason to protect an animal that has a recessive gene. Albino animals are often deaf and suffer other abnormalities that make survival in the wild a lot more challenging. By protecting them you risk passing on the trait to future generations.

One of the arguments against the killing of albino animals is that Native Americans saw them as sacred or special. While there are numerous stories of how magical encounters with ghost deer or buffalo by Native Americans there is also stories about how they killed and used their hides for special powers.
I see it like many of the other characteristics of the animal that we hunt be antler size, beard length, or whatever we see that makes it special to us.
With that said it is sad that a hunter especially a young hunter has to hide their identity because of the craziness that the legal taking of a rare moose.

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department moose registration report on the kill shows the moose was shot with a rifle at 7:15 a.m. Oct. 20 on the North Side of Black Mountain in Averill, just south of the Canadian border. The region is a haven for moose with its vast stretches of undeveloped paper-company land and the sprawling Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. The area is crisscrossed by dirt roads where a motorist can wind by forests, mountains and bogs for an afternoon without seeing another car.

The bull moose weighed in at 744 pounds and had antlers with a spread of 45 inches. The hunter was among 770 people awarded a legal permit to shoot a moose in Vermont during the Oct. 16-21 season. About 11,000 people applied for permits in this year’s annual lottery.
Although Vermont has restrictions on moose hunting, there is no prohibition on shooting an albino moose.
The animal was hauled out of the woods by horse — a common practice — loaded into a pickup and brought to be tagged and registered at the Island Pond weigh station, a temporary setup erected for the season at a highway department garage on Railroad Street. Vermont State Game Warden Jason Dukette received word that an albino had been shot and was at the weigh station to study the animal, which he estimated to be about 2 years old. The moose’s eyes were pink, as were its hooves — indicating a true albino.
“It was as white as white can be,” Dukette said.

The killing of this elk robbed all of us who enjoy seeing the elk roaming the mountain meadows of Cataloochee. I don’t think the sentence is hard enough but then again I have zero tolerance for idiots like this. I always get a kick out of the “taking of hunting privileges”…. Hello he is a poacher a hunting license means nothing to him.

Been a tough season so far opening day I had trespassers get between me and a gobbler I was working only Tom won in that situation. I’ve called in a few hens and one Jake, while Jakes are legal I let it walk in hopes of catching up with his daddy. This past Saturday my friend Rick and I hunted together in the predawn darkness I picked my spot and Rick went the other direction. It wasn’t long before we realized Rick was in the right spot as the gobbler sounded off. Don’t get me wrong this wasn’t a gimmie by any stretch of the imagination as Rick worked that bird for a couple of hours before he got him.

Weight: 21 lbs 9 oz Beard: 12.75 inches Spurs: one 1 3/16 inches the other 1 5/16 inches, both needle sharp Score: around 72

Rick left for the taxidermist with his trophy bird with 12 ¾ inch beard. I spent the rest of the day in the woods and didn’t even see a turkey. We are about half way through the season and I’m still confident I can tag one before the season goes out. Birds seem to be still henned up but once them hens start leaving the mid day action should really pick up.
