This week I review Victorinox’s One Hand Sentinel Clip Knife they graciously sent me for dv’s African Archery Safari and offer you the chance to win it.

The Victorinox One Hand Sentinel Clip Knife

The Victorinox Sentinel One Hand Clip Knife.

Overall Rating**** (4 stars of 5)

Specifications

  • Easy one-hand opening liner-lock blade with serrated edge
  • Key ring connector
  • Tweezers
  • Toothpick
  • Belt clip
  • Model# 54886

Cost**** (4 stars of 5).  $37.00 MSRP, around $22.00 street price.

Performance**** (4 stars of 5).  The knife was very, very sharp out of the box, maintained its edge, opened easily with one hand and was thin enough to clip inside a front or back pocket or inside a pack.  I carried it during my African Archery Safari.  Whatever I asked of it, it did well.

  • Pros:
    • The tweezers and toothpick are handy, especially for outdoors use
    • Came sharp and maintained its edge
    • Locking blade
    • Easy to open with one hand
    • The clip keeps it handy
    • Slim design
  • Cons:
    • Serrated blades, although aggressive for certain chores, can be difficult to sharpen and aren’t the best choices for skinning animals or camp cooking.
    • The liner lock seems best suited for a left-handed user vice right-handed.  As you are looking into the knife with the blade edge facing up the liner lock is on the right hand side which causes a right handed person to pull instead of push the liner to unlock the blade.

The Sentinel’s liner lock must be pressed to the right.

Manufacturer’s Customer Service:  Not rated, but they provided this knife in response to an inquiry from me so that is pretty nice customer support.

My old, original Tinker, top, and my current tinker, below.  Notice that the blades are much thinner from sharpening on the older one.

Victorinox Tinkers, old & new.

General notes:  I’ve carried a Victorinox Tinker knife almost daily since my deployment to the first Gulf War.  Properly maintained the blades hold an outstanding edge and their innovative designs provide a multi-use tool for nearly everyone.  Additionally, Mrs. dustyvarmint and I own six of the outstanding Victorinox-Forschner, see Forschner Knives – Buy Now, Thank Me Later.  I don’t see how one can go wrong with a Victorinox Knife.

dv Extra – Want this knife?  I will randomly pick a winner tomorrow, December 22nd, 2010 at noon from among the people who commented (comment section below).  And, it will be shipped that afternoon (in case anyone wants to use it as a gift – hint, hint).

happy hunting, dv
