Along with shot size, choke restriction is a controversial subject when it comes to predator hunting. Some will tell you X-full others will tell you modified, but people with experience will tell you to pattern your gun until you find what you are looking for. There are a few variables in choke selection such as, type of terrain and or shot distances. Typical shot distance should have a lot to do with your choice of choke. If you are constantly hunting areas that will only present you with 20-30 yard shots, then you will want something that isn’t too restricted. When calling in tight cover you’re more likely only going to be presented with a quick shot. You are going to want to use an I.C.* or a MOD*, depending on how your gun patterns. While just the opposite for more open country, where you will have time to aim and take that longer shot, FULL* and X-FULL* chokes will usually provide you the tight patterns needed to stretch out those shot distances to the limit. On the down side, the tighter your pattern the more you are going to have to take time and aim instead of just instinctively swinging. Now, if changing chokes every other stand doesn’t sound appealing, run a good tight patterning choke for all situations. I recommend that you get to know your gun, practice your aiming and swinging until you are comfortable and confident. After a bit of shouldering and swinging on targets your shot gun will start to feel like an extension of your arm. Then, using those tight chokes on hard chargers shouldn’t be a problem. Just like anything else, with practice you will learn you and your guns limits. Also, remember all chokes are not designed for all shot types. Some can be a dangerous combination, such as steel shot through a tight choke that wasn’t designed for steel. Do some research and contact your choke manufacturer for more information. Remember, pattern your shotgun at all distances you intend to shoot, point of aim and patterns can and will change with different loads and distances. Choosing a choke manufacture is a whole different subject and is more of personal preference then which is better. I run a Truloc .650 extended turkey choke in my M1 and my partner Paul is running a .660. Both throw very consistent patterns at most ranges and with multiple loads.

* I.C. = Improved cylinder
* MOD = Modified
* FULL = Full
* X-FULL = Extra full

With Cat and Fox season open, we decided we had waited long enough. Right now the fur is not worth the cost of a bullet, but it is a great time to get out there and just have a good time. We made a short trip for a half days hunt last Sunday; It was a pretty decent time. We did not hunt to hard, just trying to get back into the swing of things. Ended up seeing 7 coyotes, but only managed to get one dead. Also seen a lot of Antelope, a few Mule Deer bucks and a nice husky LION. We were glad to lay our eyes on one but, it just made us sick, this new Lion season is a waste of ink, and I am pretty disgusted that it was passed. Anyway, It was nice to get out of town to some cooler weather and we all had a great time. I am going to try to start posting more often since the season has started, and I will do my best to post a video or a new sound every month, that’s the plan anyway. Here is a clip of a coyote we called and killed on this hunt. If the shooter looks familiar, he is the former president of the APC (Arizona Predator Callers).

A 70-pound female wolf was shot and killed Jan. 25 by a coyote hunter in Roberts County.

Wolves are protected under the Endangered Species Act and state law, and it is illegal to kill them, according to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and state Game, Fish and Parks Department officials.

People who plan to hunt coyotes in northeastern South Dakota, particularly in northern Roberts County, must make sure the animal is definitely a coyote and not a wolf.

Wildlife experts are warning West End residents and visitors to Stanley Park to watch out for a problem coyote after it attacked a swan and made off with a small dog.

A coyote took two bites out of a swan in the park Wednesday and nabbed a Yorkshire Terrier that was on a walk with its owner.

The swan was in a Vancouver animal hospital Thursday where it was expected to recover, but the dog couldn’t be found, despite a frantic search through the bushes by its owner and police.

Phil Dubrulle, who coordinates the Coexisting with Coyotes program for the Stanley Park Ecology Society, said there has been a spike in the number of coyote sightings in the West End and in Stanley Park over the last month, likely of the same animal.

He said the animal has become habituated to humans, possibly after being fed directly or scavenging food left out by people in the park.

“It’s out in the open in the daytime. It’s not scared of people,” he said. “When a coyote is fed, it really blends the boundary between it being afraid of people and not.”

Dubrulle is urging residents and park visitors to act aggressively towards coyotes so they don’t lose their fear of humans.

“We tell people to be big, mean and loud and never run away from a coyote,” he said.

Although the animals tend to prey on squirrels and other small mammals, it’s not unusual for them to kill pets.

Dubrulle was more surprised that the wild canine would attack a swan.

“The swan is a big creature, and it wouldn’t usually approach and attack a creature like that,” he said.

Dubrulle said he suspects the coyote may have detected that the bird was sick before attacking.

He said he hopes the animal will not be killed, saying that generally doesn’t happen unless an animal is threatening humans.

“Our preference is to try and educate people to coexist,” Dubrulle said. “Having a coyote in your neighbourhood or park is not a bad thing. They are predating on rodents, they’re keeping that population down.”

Mike Mackintosh, a wildlife specialist for the Vancouver park board, said the Ministry of Environment has been notified of the problem animal.

But he said even if conservation officers wanted to kill it, it would be hard to catch.

“They’re extremely wary, very intelligent, and very fast,” he said. “You can turn around and blink and they’re gone.”

Mackintosh said he believes the animal is healthy.

Vancouver police Const. Jana McGuinness said the woman walking the dog reported the incident to nearby police.

Though officers helped her look for her pet in nearby bushes, it couldn’t be found.

01-15-08
A Colorado women was playing Frisbee with her dog Rufus when she said she was approached by two Coyotes, Then ” the larger one came up and bit her arm “.
26 year-old Amanda Denison said, “I thought they were dogs at first wanting to play,”. After she shook the Coyote off her arm her dog chased it away.
All this on a day when the CO Senate Committee shot down a bill on predator control.

I recently picked up a new sponsor, US Optics. They are a high end optics company here in the USA. These are some of the nicest scope I have ever had the chance to look through. So I though I would offer my readers a great discount on there products. They have a model to suit every one and a lot of great options. These scopes are hand made here in the states upon order, a true custom scope. I personally really like the SN3 and SN4 models. Here are a few prices of my favorite scopes, I you are interested in any others let me know and I will get you a great price. There are a lot of options and different reticles, so take a look here and contact me for pricing on other options.
The SN3 model comes in a few different magnifications and options but here is the 1.8 X 10. It is hard to beat this range of magnification, one of my favorites. You have the low end for up close shots and the high range for those shots way out there.
SN3 1.8 – 10X

$ 1,425.00

SN 3 T-pal – is a 3.2-17X Rifle scope that is made for target engagement out to 1500+ yards. Turret Parallax Adjustment is utilized on this model vs. an adjustable objective. This can be had with the knob on the left, right or top of the scopes turret. Reliable adjustments and extreme durability make this scope a very affordable long range tool that will fit well with most rifle platforms. There are a lot of great options for this and all other scopes, please contact me for pricing on other scopes and options.

SN 3 T-pal 3.2- 17X

$ 2,025.00

The SN4 model comes in a few magnifications and options, here is the price on the 1-4 and the 1.5-6. These are great scopes for typical hunting situations. You have the low end for tight quarters with enough power for most other situations on the high end. This scope is quickly becoming my favorite.

SN4 1.5 – 6X or 1 – 4X

$ 1,115.00

For those of you looking for a high end spotting scope check out the 15-40X. Great piece of glass.
$ 945.00

Just shoot me over a email with what model you are interested in and any other options you want to add and I will send you a bill.

thanks for looking!

A friend and I made it out Sunday to a spot I hadn’t been to in a few months for a half day hunt.
It turned out to be a decent day, weather was good and cold, wind was mild and coyotes were out.
All coyotes came in fairly quick, most under three minutes. Sounds of the day was bird distress from the Foxpro. Two of these coyotes wouldn’t have been possible with out the MOJO Woodpecker. One came in from out hard right and had us pegged but still circled wide and stopped for one last look at the decoy. Another came in from down wind to take a look, my partner made a great running shot on that one.

I was supposed to head down south for a day of calling but the weatherman said it might be a good idea if I didn’t. It was going to get pretty windy with a good chance of rain. So I decided to stay in town. Like yesterday it was a perfect morning for calling so after a few cups of coffee I had to head out. My plan was to head down the road from the house and do a stand or two. On my way I spotted a few coyotes out mousing in some state trust land so I pulled over and called them across the road for some pictures. I wish I had brought the new canon camera, but I had what I had. After a few pictures I headed to my spot.

I knew as soon as I got set up it was going to be a productive stand, the wind was good and it was overcast and cold. A new sound I uploaded the other day (Harpin Hare) had been playing for 5-6 minuted when I caught this Coyote bearing down fast on the old MOJO Critter decoy. He had made it to 4-5′ from the decoy before I could get the Cat Swatter on him. I called for a little while longer, but there were no other takers.

PHOENIX- The following is a press release from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office:

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Human Smuggling Unit stopped another load vehicle late yesterday, this one with 12 people inside a Chevy Astro, including the coyote.

The stop was made on I-17 near Anthem Way after deputies spotted the vehicle travelling with a rear brake light out.

Human smuggling detectives interviewed the occupants and determined that each agreed to pay between $700.00 and $1500.00 for illegal entry into the U.S. The illegals were destined for California and Mississippi.

Of those found in the vehicle, four (4) were booked into jail on state smuggling and coconspirator charges, a class four felony. The remaining were juveniles who were turned over to Immigration and Customs officials.

Sheriff Arpaio says the time for another crime suppression/human smuggling operation is drawing near. “We are readying deputies and the posse for a big upcoming operation,” Arpaio says

This case may not have been a actual Bobcat, but there are those out there that try and domesticate these wild animals, usually with negative consequences. I met a domesticated Bobcat once and there wasn’t anything tame about it.

Santa thought he was going to get rabies for Christmas.

Professional Santa Jonathan Bebbington can relax: the feline that bit him last weekend at an Atlantic County pet store is neither rabid nor a wild bobcat.

Bebbington, 47, of Vineland, was working at a charity photo event in Mays Landing when the cat bit him, sparking a flurry of concern over whether Santa would need rabies shots.

According to Atlantic County Health officials and the cat’s owner, the animal was a Pixie-Bob, a domesticated cat distantly related to the wild bobcat.

Bebbington was posing with animals at a fundraiser for Penny Angel’s Beagle Rescue when Christine Haughey, of Egg Harbor, brought her large cat into the store on a leash and harness.

“There were dogs around, and the poor thing was terrified,” said Bebbington, who picked up the cat to calm it down. The state Department of Corrections locksmith has five years’ experience playing Santa to dogs and cats.

“It was a beautiful animal,” he added.

Just after a photographer snapped the picture, the cat sunk its teeth into Bebbington’s hand and wrist several times, drawing blood. It happened so fast, Haughey left before anyone thought to ask her whether the animal had a current rabies shot.

Initially, Bebbington worried that he would have to undergo a series of five rabies vaccinations and postpone his holiday vacation. But after Bebbington appeared Tuesday on NBC10, Haughey came forward.

Though bobcats are illegal to own as pets, the state veterinarian said that pixie-bobs are domesticated “hybrid” cats. They are larger than regular house cats and have shorter, stubbier tails, giving them a slight resemblance to bobcats.

Atlantic County Health officials said Haughey told them she bought “Benny” as a baby from a breeder. He had received all the necessary vaccines, she said, including a rabies shot.

As a precaution, state health officials said they asked Haughey to keep the cat inside for two weeks to make sure he does not show signs of disease.

Meanwhile, Bebbington’s bites are healing nicely.

“I’m just glad it’s all turning out for the better,” he said.
