Jonathan Shaw, an NCSU graduate, wrote a great article on Realtree’s website discussing deer warts (cutaneous fibromas). Although not terribly common, once a hunter has encountered a deer bearing these awful growths it becomes hard to forget. Certainly not a pretty sight, but part of nature nonetheless. I liked the article. Over the last year I have pictures detailing a doe’s cycle of warts that got really bad in late summer but finally cleaned up somewhat around January and February. It was the first deer I had ever seen with warts and once her button buck fawn was old enough to eat on his own he stayed away from her during October, November, and December(could have been due to the rut or the nasty growths that obstructed him from nursing) but he is back with her as 3 additional buton bucks have joined her and she has played the part of nanny for the ffour little bucks throughout the remainder of the winter months. She has cleaned up for the most part but still has some nasty looking abrasions that I hope to keep getting pictures of so I will know if she ever does “get over this”.

Adrian, great story! It is very neat to watch a deer’s progression through the cycle. We watched a buck up at Chesapeake Farms during summer 2007 go through the same process. Unfortunately, he wound up dead almost as soon as the fibromas seemed to disappear. Not sure if he died of related causes or not.
