I was finishing up my GPS collar round-up last Friday morning when I picked up a couple of the bigger sets at the research site.
Set #1 was a buck we called “Mystery Buck” because he managed to avoid 12 cameras running for the last 6 months entirely on the property. He was sighted a few times during the rut and it was nice to put hands on his big 8 point frame. Put a rough tape to it and he easily grosses in the 140s.
Next set was a buck we call “Right Angle” because of his 90 degree turns in both his brow tines. You could also call him the Mule Deer Buck and nobody would wonder why with deep 4-6″ forks in both his G2s and matching kickers at the fork’s junctions.
Haven’t put a tape on him yet, but another surefire bet to be in the mid-high 140s. His right and left side were laying only 100 feet apart or so.
Also, I picked up my 6th free-range shed of the year on Thursday doing 60 mph down the road. I was looking out in a freshly burned pine stand and noticed what I thought was a main beam arching up off the ground. I made a U-turn and sure enough, a big 4 point side was laying about 45 feet off the road embankment. I haven’t taken a picture of it yet, but with good mass and a 10″ G2, it came off a 125-130 class Alabama buck.
That’s all for now, but hopefully I can get out this weekend and explore some woods in search of a few more antlers and maybe even do a little turkey hunting.
