August 16th is circled in RED on my Calendar. The opening day for Archery Bear and most of the B-Zone Deer Hunting in Northern California. I’ll be doing a DIY bear hunt in Del Norte County near the Oregon Border with Tim Lockwood of Lockwood Hunting Services. Nearly 50 % of the bears in California are killed North of Redding annually. In Del Norte County alone, the 10 year average harvest is between 31 and 32 bears are taken. The majority are killed while hunters are hunting deer.

Tim has the distinction of having a contract with a private timber company for bear hunting on over 250,000 acres of Northern California forest land.  Since the season for hunting with hounds doesn’t open until September 20th, I have been able to secure access to the property under Tim’s guidance.  His mainstay is pursuing bears and hogs with his hound pack. you can find out more about Tim and his operation at www.lockwoodhuntingservices.com .

I’ll be hunting bears spot and stalk along the creeks, clearcuts and berry bushes throughout the hunt area, with my bow in hand.  If this sounds like something you would be interested in drop Tim a note at

Until then all I can do is count the days…tick tok…..tick tok….
