July 11th
Today was a busy day. We were all up early. I had a 13.1 mile training run in Healdsburg, Kelsey and Natalie had hunter safety, Erin and Sydney were helping at the Two Rock VFD Pancake Breakfast.
After finishing my run in 2:09:55 while doing a 6 minute run/1 minute walk interval, I swung by the breakfast to help clean up, then took Erin and Sydney home for a nap.
Headed out that evening to hunt as the fog blew in once more. Wind was gusting in the 20′s and I was glad I had brought my jacket. I hiked up the hill and quickly decided that no deer was going to be on the blustery saddles so I dropped down into a more sheltered spot with a nice vantage point of the valley below. I hunkered down by a rock and an old fence and glassed the far ridge. No action there but a 6 inch spike, still in velvet fed out through the wild oats at 70 yards and then came within 40 yards before he disappeared over the hill. I found his bed below my rock.
I was amazed at the cover just the tall grass offered. A deer could lay down and flat disappear on an open hillside. Perhaps I should scan those open fields a little more with the glasses?
As shooting light faded I walked out back to the truck. As I drove home I saw a doe and fawn feeding 25 yards away.
