EDGEFIELD, S.C. — The National Wild Turkey Federation’s Edgefield Local chapter is hosting a Women in the Outdoors beginning pistol and personal defense class at the Wild Turkey Center in Edgefield, S.C., June 7.
Through the event, South Carolina residents can learn basic pistol-shooting and self-defense techniques from expert instructors in a stress-free environment.
“While crime rates have dropped considerably over the last couple of decades, it’s good for women to know how to defend themselves if they ever need to,” said Rhonda Hawfield, Women in the Outdoors regional coordinator.
The class is limited to 20 participants, and is open to women ages 14 and older. It consists of classroom seminars covering NRA FIRST Steps Pistol course, basic handgun cleaning and personal defense, in addition to range time. Women ages 14 to 17 must have a female legal guardian register and accompany them.
Cost to attend is $125 for which participants will receive an NRA FIRST Steps Pistol certification, course materials, lunch, Women in the Outdoors membership and a subscription to Women In The Outdoors magazine. The registration fee includes the use of handguns, ammunition and supplies.
During the event, there will be a silent auction and raffles featuring exclusive NWTF merchandise, and the Turkey Shoppe will be open for shopping opportunities during the day.
“This event is about women learning skills and having fun,” said Matt Lindler, event committee chairman and instructor. “Participants will have the opportunity to learn handgun and self-defense skills, and have a great time doing it.”
The NWTF’s Women in the Outdoors program is designed to help members develop outdoor skills and emphasizes the importance of wildlife management and the role of hunters in conservation.
