Frankfort, Ky. – One of two black bears being exhibited at the Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort died over the weekend.
A Salato Center employee discovered the 7½-year-old male bear dead in its outside enclosure around 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15. There were no immediate signs as to the cause of death. Officials at the University of Kentucky Animal Diagnostic Laboratory in Lexington will attempt to determine the cause of the bear’s death.
Veterinarian Dr. Jessica Cockley did not observe any health problems with the second bear when she arrived at the scene Saturday morning. The deceased bear showed no previous signs of illness.
The Salato Center had not yet opened its doors to the public at the time a staff member discovered the deceased bear.
