If your deer have new bedding cover, but your wife doesn’t… you might be a Quality Deer Manager. Few people know that better than comedian, television personality and die-hard deer hunter Jeff Foxworthy, who will entertain guests at QDMA’s Grand Banquet & Auction at the 2011 QDMA National Convention in August, in Nashville, Tennessee.
Foxworthy, an outspoken supporter of the Quality Deer Management philosophy and a QDMA member, first spoke to a QDMA audience in 2006 at the National Convention in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Far from his well-known comedy routine, Foxworthy instead spoke candidly about his obsession with deer hunting and his more recent passion for wise stewardship of land, habitat, and wildlife. It was an unscripted speech that revealed a unique kinship between the speaker and deer hunters in the audience. Of course, we’re talking Foxworthy here: There were plenty of one-liners and laughs along the way, including Foxworthy’s own list of ways to recognize if “you might be a Quality Deer Manager.”
“I’m here today because I love deer,” Foxworthy said. “I love the sport, and in the last four or five years I have become totally addicted to QDM. Glenn Garner is my property manager down in Georgia, and he said people always ask him what Jeff is really like. His answer is, ‘He had dinner with the President at the White House, and he came out of the White House and got in the car, and before he was out of the driveway called me and asked if I got those 10 acres of corn in the ground before it rained.’ That’s the passion of my life.”
Since then, the internationally known comedian has continued his involvement with QDMA, this year inviting attendees of QDMA’s Deer Steward certification course to tour his Georgia hunting property, “The Beloved.”
At the 2011 National Convention in Nashville, which is open to the public, Foxworthy will be the featured entertainer at QDMA’s Grand Banquet & Auction on Friday night, August 12, at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. The Convention is being held in conjunction with the Bass Pro Shops Land & Wildlife Expo the same weekend, which is also open to the public.
The QDMA National Convention runs from August 11 to 13 and includes educational seminars, banquets, auctions and much more. For more information about the QDMA National Convention or to register, visit www.QDMA.com.
