CCI Introduces New Tactical .22 Long Rifle Load for AR-Style Rifles
Posted by

CCI® now offers a load specifically for AR-style rifles-new .22 Long Rifle AR-Tactical. Shooters can find these accurate and affordable bullets on store shelves now.

Consistent Performance
These new rounds are built to CCI’s high standards. AR-Tactical bullets offer excellent accuracy–including 1.5 inches at 100 yards for 10-shot groups in factory testing. Testing also was conducted specifically for common law enforcement and military Smith & Wesson M&P 15/22 firearms. This testing confirmed the performance that tactical users require.

Optimized Design
A CCI case, primer and bullet lube combine with clean-burning powder to provide tactical-grade performance. The 40-grain rounds are a target bullet with a copper-plated round nose (CPRN) for smooth feeding. Tactical shooters can blast through an entire magazine without worrying of a glitch in feeding or on-target performance. A speed of 1200 fps allows for excellent accuracy with low recoil.

“These new .22 Long Rifle AR-Tactical rounds are a great value to all shooters,” said Brand Director Rick Stoeckel. “Our rigorous testing came back with impressive results, showing that these guns like a heavier bullet with a relatively low muzzle velocity. Now we are ready to meet the rising demand of AR-style shooters.”

AR-Tactical is available in 375-count loose packed, re-closeable boxes. To learn more about the new rounds and the entire CCI lineup, visit www.CCI-ammunition.com

Cabela’s Donates to Dallas Ecological Foundation’s Outdoor Adventures Program

Cabela’s donated $20,000 to the Dallas Ecological Foundation’s Outdoor Adventures physical education program, which aims to encourage outdoor recreation among young people. The contribution came from proceeds of a Jack Ingram concert celebrating the grand opening of the company’s Allen, Texas, store last month.

The donation will be used to provide four area high school districts with equipment for the National Archery in Schools Program – which includes target training in physical education classes with the goal of increasing extracurricular opportunities and participation in shooting sports – as well as Shakespeare fishing rods and Cabela’s Dutch oven cooking gear for similar outdoor learning sequences.

“Over 200 students at the Allen Independent School District’s Lowery Freshman Center have signed up for the Outdoor Adventures class offered this fall. They are extremely excited to have all of their outdoor equipment furnished by the newest Cabela’s store in Texas,” said Scot McClure of the Dallas Ecological Foundation (DEF). DEF is a nonprofit charitable foundation affiliated with the Dallas Safari Club.

Benefitting schools include: Allen High School, Allen Ninth Grade High School, Plano High School, Plano East High School, Plano West High School, McKinney High School, McKinney North High School, McKinney Boyd High School and Lovejoy High School.

The remaining funds will be applied toward equipment for any other Collin County secondary schools adopting the Outdoor Adventures education program.

“The young people taking up outdoor recreation today will be the stewards of America’s natural resources tomorrow,” said Cabela’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer Michael Copeland, who announced the contribution at the April concert. “So the more we can help educate them about the outdoors, the better. We’re proud to support the Outdoor Adventures program.”

Foxworthy to Speak at QDMA National Convention
Posted by

If your deer have new bedding cover, but your wife doesn’t… you might be a Quality Deer Manager. Few people know that better than comedian, television personality and die-hard deer hunter Jeff Foxworthy, who will entertain guests at QDMA’s Grand Banquet & Auction at the 2011 QDMA National Convention in August, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Foxworthy, an outspoken supporter of the Quality Deer Management philosophy and a QDMA member, first spoke to a QDMA audience in 2006 at the National Convention in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Far from his well-known comedy routine, Foxworthy instead spoke candidly about his obsession with deer hunting and his more recent passion for wise stewardship of land, habitat, and wildlife. It was an unscripted speech that revealed a unique kinship between the speaker and deer hunters in the audience. Of course, we’re talking Foxworthy here: There were plenty of one-liners and laughs along the way, including Foxworthy’s own list of ways to recognize if “you might be a Quality Deer Manager.”

“I’m here today because I love deer,” Foxworthy said. “I love the sport, and in the last four or five years I have become totally addicted to QDM. Glenn Garner is my property manager down in Georgia, and he said people always ask him what Jeff is really like. His answer is, ‘He had dinner with the President at the White House, and he came out of the White House and got in the car, and before he was out of the driveway called me and asked if I got those 10 acres of corn in the ground before it rained.’ That’s the passion of my life.”

Since then, the internationally known comedian has continued his involvement with QDMA, this year inviting attendees of QDMA’s Deer Steward certification course to tour his Georgia hunting property, “The Beloved.”

At the 2011 National Convention in Nashville, which is open to the public, Foxworthy will be the featured entertainer at QDMA’s Grand Banquet & Auction on Friday night, August 12, at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. The Convention is being held in conjunction with the Bass Pro Shops Land & Wildlife Expo the same weekend, which is also open to the public.

The QDMA National Convention runs from August 11 to 13 and includes educational seminars, banquets, auctions and much more. For more information about the QDMA National Convention or to register, visit www.QDMA.com.

Court Ruling Protects Hunting Throughout National Wildlife Refuge System
Posted by

In a ruling issued today, Safari Club International (SCI) claimed a major victory in a lawsuit that has threatened hunting on National Wildlife Refuges since it was filed in 2003. Judge Gwin of the Ohio federal district court today issued a ruling in favor of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and SCI to protect our public lands and keep them open for hunting.

The Fund for Animals sued to challenge hunting on 37 refuges throughout the National Wildlife Refuge system, claiming that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) had not completed a sufficient environmental analysis of the impact of hunting on these refuges. SCI immediately joined as an intervenor in the case on behalf of the FWS in order to help defend the hunting opportunities that exist on the refuges.

In 2006, the case saw a setback, when a D.C. federal district court ruled in the Plaintiffs’ favor, sending the matter back to the FWS to conduct additional environmental review. The case then expanded to include additional refuges that had been opened to hunting since the case began, and Plaintiffs amended their original claims in an attempt to stop hunting on almost 70 refuges throughout the country.

After the FWS complied with the court order to conduct additional environmental review, the case returned to court for its examination of the agency’s revised efforts. Once again, SCI’s litigators aggressively defended the agency’s compliance, this time meeting with success. Judge Gwin issued a resounding ruling in favor of the FWS and SCI, leaving no room for question about the Fund for Animals’ failure to substantiate its challenge against refuge hunting.

“This is a long overdue victory for SCI and our litigation team’s efforts to protect the freedom to hunt and keep our public lands open for hunting,” said SCI President Larry Rudolph. “It is clear that the facts were on our side in this case. I commend Judge Gwin for his decision and believe that SCI’s participation in this case proves once again that we truly are First for Hunters.”

SCI was joined in its intervention by U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Delta Waterfowl Foundation, the California Waterfowl Association, and Izaak Walton League of America.

Spinney Mountain State Park Schedules Boating Opening Day
Posted by

Spinney Mountain State Park will open to shore fishermen and boats on Wednesday, April 6, providing anglers with one of their coveted annual spring fishing rites. The opening will officially mark the beginning of the 2011 Spinney Mountain Reservoir fishing season.

“The reservoir is down approximately 4.2 vertical feet below the spillway elevation, so boats will be allowed to launch at both the North and South Boat Ramps on opening day,” said Spinney Mountain State Park Manager Kevin Tobey.

Nearby Eleven Mile Reservoir opened to boating on April 4 and offers camping and expansive shore fishing opportunities as well as hiking trails.

Spinney Mountain’s gates will open at 6:07 a.m. on April 6. Colorado State Parks annual passes will be sold at the gate from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. on opening day. Annual passes cost $70 and are valid at all Colorado State Parks for 12 months from the date of purchase. Daily park passes are available for $7.

As in previous years, vehicles will not be allowed to line up at the entrance gate until after 7 p.m. on April 5, in order to allow staff to complete the final preparations for opening day.

Each season, opening day at Spinney Mountain State Park attracts anglers from Colorado and surrounding states. Fishermen are reminded that only artificial flies and lures are permitted at Spinney Mountain Reservoir, and that items with any scent are prohibited, regardless of whether scent is added by the manufacturer or by the angler after the item is purchased. The bag and possession limit and minimum size for trout caught in the reservoir is one fish, 20 inches or longer. There is no bag or possession limit on pike, and anglers are encouraged to harvest all pike they catch to help maintain a proper balance between trout and pike.

Trout fishing is expected to remain very good this year, thanks in large part to the Division of Wildlife’s continuing annual fall stocking program in which large trout are stocked shortly before ice covers the reservoir.

“The Division of Wildlife stocks 12-14 inch trout each fall, enabling them to continue to feed and grow during the winter,” said Tobey. “They are less likely to be preyed upon by the northern pike in the winter since the pike’s metabolism slows down and they become less active, while the trout remain active throughout the winter.”

With the discovery of zebra and quagga mussels and larvae in several western states, including some reservoirs in Colorado, Colorado State Parks is asking boaters and anglers help to protect Colorado waters from all aquatic nuisance species (ANS). Zebra and quagga mussels are non-native, invasive species that spread very quickly, causing harmful effects to the environment. All boaters, belly boaters and people wading into water are advised to take a few simple, precautionary steps – every time they go to a lake, river or stream.

Before leaving a lake or other waterway, boaters should:

• DRAIN the water from the boat, live well and the lower unit of the engine
• INSPECT all exposed surfaces.
• REMOVE all plant and animal material.
• CLEAN the hull of your boat.
• DRY the boat, fishing gear, and equipment.

Boat Inspectors will be available at the park entrance daily from a half hour before sunrise until a half hour after sunset April 6 through Oct. 31 to inspect all trailered boats. Boats that have not been inspected or that are too dirty to inspect will not be allowed to continue into the park.

For more information, call the park office at (719) 748-3401 or access information at www.parks.state.co.us.

Attracting more than 12 million visitors per year, Colorado’s 42 State Parks are a vital cornerstone of Colorado’s economy and quality of life. Colorado State Parks encompass 224,447 land and water acres, offering some of the best outdoor recreation destinations in the state. Colorado State Parks is a leader in providing opportunities for outdoor recreation, protecting the state’s favorite landscapes, teaching generations about nature and partnering with communities. Oklahoma Man Convicted of Illegally Killing 220-class buck
Posted by

A Bokoshe man has been convicted of four counts associated with the illegal killing of a well-known trophy buck in Latimer County and has counts pending against him on the illegal possession of over 100 other deer antler racks and other wildlife.

Kenny Nixon is convicted of taking deer in closed season, illegally possessing deer parts, removing the antlers and head of a deer while abandoning the body and abandoning a deer carcass without proper disposal in Latimer County District Court. The conviction resulted in Nixon’s lifetime hunting license being revoked for 20 years, and he was ordered to pay fines and court costs at around $5,000.

“Wildlife violators make up just a small number compared to the thousands of sportsmen who respect and follow our state’s wildlife laws, but those who do violate the law take something away from other hunters and everyone in Oklahoma who enjoys wildlife,” said Robert Fleenor, law enforcement chief for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. “The Wildlife Department works hard to stop the illegal taking of wildlife to protect our resources for everyone to enjoy.”

The case dates back to Oct. 1, 2009, when the carcass of a trophy whitetail deer dubbed the “BP buck” was found on British Petroleum property in Latimer County with its head and antlers missing.

Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation game wardens Shane Fields stationed in Pittsburg Co., Randy Fennell and Thomas Gillham stationed in LeFlore Co. and James Williams stationed in LeFlore and Latimer counties have all been actively involved in working the case.

Game wardens first learned of the BP buck in September 2008, and they kept watch on the animal’s whereabouts.

The buck survived the 2008 deer season and was rediscovered in February 2009 after it had gone some time without being observed by game wardens. In August 2009, the buck was photographed on BP land. By then, the buck was well known by locals, and game wardens continued efforts to keep tabs on the deer.

The buck lived until sometime in late September 2009, and shortly after that the deer carcass was found. It’s head and antlers were removed, and the carcass was abandoned. It was not immediately confirmed whether the carcass was that of the BP buck, but it was suspected, especially when photographs of the well-known deer’s antlers began appearing on websites across the Internet.

Because of the high interest and visibility of the deer in newspaper photographs and online, wardens began receiving a number of leads. But it was a tip offered in November 2009 by the Oklahoma Drug Task Force that eventually led wardens to a residence in LeFlore Co. other than Nixon’s where the antlers were reportedly hidden. A search warrant was obtained, and the antlers were seized from an air duct compartment.

When contacted, Nixon admitted to killing the BP buck with a .25-06 Browning rifle and filled out a voluntary statement for game wardens. He was cited for poaching the buck, and the antlers, as well as a dead owl, were tagged and confiscated for evidence. The next day 103 untagged deer racks were confiscated along with an elk antler, and counts against Nixon are currently pending in those cases.

Additionally, through the Wildlife Department’s involvement in the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact, Nixon’s lifetime hunting license revocation will apply in at least 34 other participating states. Recently the Wildlife Department joined the compact, which assures that illegal hunters who violate certain game laws in member states will receive the same treatment as residents of the state in which the violation occurred.

Game wardens are employees of the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, the state agency charged with conserving Oklahoma’s wildlife. For more information about the Wildlife Department, log on to www.wildlifedepartment.com.

An Objective Head-2-Head Test Between the Magnus Bullhead and the Diamond Edition Gobbler Guillotine
Posted by

Roe Hunting Resources cuts through the hype and misconceptions surrounding two of the most popular “Head Chopper” style broadheads used for turkey hunting on the market today, the Magnus Bullhead and the Diamond Edition Gobbler Guillotine. Covering everything from paper-tuning field tips to the Customer Service support of the manufacturers, the 66-minute video covers everything a hunter needs to know and/or evaluate when deciding to purchase, and shoot, these types of turkey broadheads.

While much has been written about the Magnus Bullhead and the ORIGINAL Gobbler Guillotine, comparisons of those heads are comparing “apples to oranges” because the Original Gobbler Guillotine is old technology. Magnus improved upon the original technology when they developed and introduced their Bullhead, but so did Arrowdynamic Solutions, the makers of the Original Gobbler Guillotine, when they introduced their Diamond Edition Gobbler Guillotine. Roe Hunting Resources offers a true “apples to apples” objective comparison between the two heads and the latest technology.

Designed to give the viewer a complete picture of what a hunter needs to do before attempting to shoot a “Head Chopper” style broadhead, and what to expect when shooting either of the heads – both at the archery range and in the field. This video is not an advertisement for either broadhead; the viewer is left to make up their own mind as to which head is right for them.

Released essentially as the “Part One” of a two-part complete evaluation, this video stops just short of taking you into the field on actual turkey hunts where the heads are tested, and the results of the customer service calls and interactions of both manufacturers. These will be the topics of the follow-up “Part Two” RHR Objective Head-2-Head comparison to be released in a couple of weeks.
