Today, bear season opens in North Carolina. On Thursday it will open in one of the state’s mountain sancturaries between Mt. Mitchell and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Against the wishes of some, NC officials say there are a few too many bears roaming the woods in this area, so they have opted to offer bear tags for this region selected by lottery. The hunt will be open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays beginning the 19th and run for 8 weeks.
