Critics are saying that the Timpooneke Campground at American Fork Canyon in Utah, should have been immediately closed down after the first attack on a camper last Sunday. Instead, officials say they notified campers of the presence of a bear. Later that same night, 11-year old Samuel Ives was taken from his tent by a black bear, dragged 400 yards and mauled to death. The bear was found the next day and killed.
With all the criticism, Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. responded to the public in his monthly public television news conference stating that officials handled the bear mauling by the book.
“The books that we have used may be somewhat anachronistic,” Huntsman said. “Maybe we have to update the book. We will do everything necessary to save human life.”
