I’m so appreciative of young angling phenom Cricket Coates for taking time out of her crazy schedule to answer some questions for my readers. What an amazing young lady! It will be fun to follow her as her career grows and thrives. ~DesertRat

1. How did you get into fishing? Do you come from a fishing family?
Yes, I come from a fishing family. I’ve been fishing with my Dad, brothers and Uncles since I could walk.

2. For my readers’ benefit – how old are you?
I’m 15.

3. You’re fishing pro tournaments now – how exciting is that? Is it intimidating?
It is very exciting, not necessarily intimidating because I KNOW there’s a huge skill level difference- and the Pros are extremely nice and my partner is there to teach me and give me the experience. So it’s all very positive.

4. I found out about you via Darcizzle’s announcement regarding sponsorships – is it hard getting sponsors?
I have been EXTREMELY blessed with my sponsorships. I had a wonderful Media Fishing Family that really helped get Darcizzle, No Coast Fishing, Line Cutterz and others to notice me during my fund raising to get to Idaho. So because of them I had great sponsors reach out to me.

5. How do you fit school in, with all the fishing?
I have to be very conscientious about my school. I’m an honor student, and school has always been pretty easy for me. This is my first year in High School and I’m trying to find a balance between my passion for fishing and its schedule and school and the demands of high school classes. But I am working it out so far.

6. What are some other hobbies you enjoy?
I have played soccer the past 6 years. I miss that some. But I chose the fishing. Again, trying to keep the balance with my grades and school. I’m a book worm. I love to read. I get that from my Mom. I love a good movie in my down time. Hanging out with my friends. But, most weekends I’m on the road fishing. And during the week it’s school, youth group, and maybe a football or baseball game I can go watch with friends.

7. Do you only fish largemouth bass?
No, I’ve fished small mouth, striper, and I salt water fish also. However, most of my tournaments have been for largemouth.

8. What fishing trips are on your wish list?
I just won the El Salto trip! I am stoked for that. I’d love to go on an amazon trip to catch Peacock bass. I’ve seen people fishing in Alaska – although I’m a bit of a whimp in the cold. I’d really love to learn to fly fish too.

9. Do you want to fish for a career or do you have other aspirations?
Of course I think it would be amazing to make a living from being a pro. But I know how rare that is. Meeting lots of the great people I’ve had the opportunity to meet has opened my eyes to all the different career paths in the fishing Industry, and so I think if I don’t make it as a pro, I’ll be able to find another niche. Maybe a host of a fishing show! That would be amazing!! Or something in advertising.
