First off – I am very grateful to Beth from Bloom Communications for reaching out to me and providing info on the Bite Away device. A gizmo touted to provide relief from insect stings. Beth was kind enough to get one sent to me for evaluation! ~DesertRat

MibeTec, a leading medical device company for local thermotherapy based in Berlin, Germany, today announced the U.S. launch of Bite Away®, expanding the company’s international footprint and bringing the FDA cleared medical device to U.S. consumers. Celebrated for its chemical-free treatment of insect bites, Bite Away’s patented safety technology utilizes concentrated heat to provide effective relief of symptomatic itching, swelling, and pain associated with insect bites and stings after only a three or five second application.

Bite Away is an electronic medical device used for the external treatment of bites and stings from mosquitoes, wasps, hornets, gnats, horseflies, and other pesky insects. The device, roughly the size of a thermometer, sports a ceramic tip that warms up in seconds to provide rapid, heat-concentrated relief to the affected skin. As a dermatologically tested, chemical-free solution to irritated insect bites, Bite Away is suitable for children over the age of 2 (with self-administration for ages 12 and up) and all adults, including pregnant women, and allergy sufferers.
“MibeTec is thrilled to bring to the U.S. a product that has performed so well in Germany for many years,” said Stefan Heuvelmann, managing director, MibeTec Germany. “We are proud to present the first FDA cleared device in the U.S. that provides instant relief from irritating and uncomfortable insect bites and stings – relief that comes without chemicals or other irritants.

So even though I love gadgets, I’m always pretty skeptical. We’ve all seen the products from K-Tel or “As Seen on TV” and they seem to be pretty hit and miss. Probably more miss than hit. Gadgets always look cool but rarely work as advertised. Or they do work but are very impractical. I have to say – BiteAway is amazing!

Believe it or not we do have mosquitoes in central Arizona but they come in waves that are directly tied to rain activity. When the BiteAway arrived for me to try, my wife happened to have a bite when I took it out of the package. I tried it on her and she couldn’t believe it! As for me, it wasn’t long and we had some late-summer rain and the inevitable waves of mosquitoes. I seem to git bitten frequently while working at the computer in the house (our back door usually open), particularly around my ankles. My wife is a mosquito magnet, getting bit just about everywhere. The BiteAway got plenty of use and frankly – we couldn’t believe how effective this device is!

This thing flat out works, and it works well. A word of caution though – it uses “concentrated heat” to help provide relief at the bite site. Concentrated heat is well – hot. Don’t use this on kids until you are well familiar with what it feels like. I can almost guarantee that kids are not gonna like this, even if it works.

We have found that all of the creams, ointments and liniments designed for insect bites are only marginally effective. Some are greasy, some are smelly. This device is now a mainstay in our house. It has provided relief to every type of insect bite we have encountered, it does it quickly and easily, and it has worked every single time. You can buy the device on their site for around 40 dollars and considering you will likely never need to buy another cream or lotion – it is worth it. The Bite Away is highly recommended!!
