Bass Pro Shops has renewed its annual sponsorship of a special “federal holiday” created to acknowledge hunters, anglers and conservation-National Hunting and Fishing Day, set for Saturday, September 25, 2010.

Congress formalized the annual commemoration in 1972. Every U.S. President from Nixon through Obama has proclaimed the day as an important reminder that conservation in America succeeds thanks to funding and leadership from hunters and anglers.

Sponsorship from Bass Pro Shops will help Wonders of Wildlife museum-the official home of NHF Day, based in Springfield, Mo.-with educational and outreach campaigns to help build citizen understanding and appreciation of hunting and fishing.

“Public celebrations of hunting and fishing traditions are annually organized by outdoors enthusiasts around the country, and we’re pleased to offer free planning guides and tools to help make these events a success. We’re also developing new PSAs, games and activities, communications and other promotions to help deliver the NHF Day message throughout the year,” said Denise Wagner of Wonders of Wildlife, adding that most NHF Day resources are, or will be, available at

The entire USA Shooting Team is serving as honorary chair for NHF Day 2010. With 103 Olympic medals for rifle, pistol and shotgun marksmanship, the U.S. excels in few sports more than shooting. Only track and field, swimming, diving, wrestling and boxing have been more prolific medal producers for Americans. In fact, shooting ranks ahead of gymnastics, figure skating, volleyball and more than 30 other Olympic sports. Most members of the current USA Shooting Team are active hunters and anglers, blending a passion for the outdoors with winning on the world stage.
