Ohio Department of Natural Resources

Hunters will be selected through a lottery held on Saturday, September 15

DELAWARE, OH — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Parks and Recreation in cooperation with the Division of Wildlife will again conduct a special deer management project within the Lewis Center area at Alum Creek State Park. This area is approximately 320 acres in size and has a large deer population. The project will take place between November 1, 2007 and January 31, 2008.

“The goals of the project are to reduce deer numbers in the area while creating additional hunting opportunities for archery hunters,” said Victor Ricks, Alum Creek State Park manager.

Alum Creek State Park is located in southern Delaware County, an area of Ohio that has a rapidly growing deer population. “Deer thrive in the area because of an abundance of habitat found in the park, adjacent agricultural land and suburban backyards where hunting has been restricted or prohibited. The end result in these protected areas is an abundance of deer that leads to increased incidences of crop, landscape and property damage. Also, there is an increased potential for deer/vehicle collisions.

Hunters who wish to participate in this year’s controlled archery deer hunt at Alum Creek State Park must first appear in person and enter a general lottery drawing to be held at the Park Office, 3615 S. Old State Rd, Delaware, Ohio on Saturday, September 15. Applications will be taken beginning at 9 a.m. and the drawing will be held at 10 a.m.

Applications will only be accepted from participants who have pre-qualified with their archery equipment prior to the drawing date. Applicants may pre-qualify at Delaware Sports at 4059 State Route 36/37, telephone 740-363-0806. Hours are Tuesday through Friday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday noon to 6 p.m. Applicants must also bring a current Ohio hunting license and deer permit issued in the applicant’s name. Immediately after the drawing, successful applicants will attend an orientation session and be issued a hunting permit.

The project period will be split into two seasons, November 1 through December 15, 2007 and December 16, 2007 through January 31, 2008. Twenty hunters will be selected for each one, allowing a total of forty hunters to participate in this year’s hunt. This will provide approximately 16 acres for each hunter participating in the project.
